Enjoy Cooling Breezes and Stunning Sea Views High Above Brewer’s Bay at Canefield House

Canefield House is a beautifully presented and exceptionally well-maintained three-bedroom villa on the peaceful Greenbank Estate overlooking Brewer’s Bay in north-central Tortola. Occupying its own 10-acre plot some 850 feet above sea level, it was built during the early 1990s on land formerly used for sugar-cane cultivation – and it’s from this that it derives its name. This favoured position endows the house with truly stunning sea views, and even on the hottest days it benefits from welcome cooling breezes. Large and as a result wonderfully spacious, the villa has three bedrooms, each fully air-conditioned, and between them these and the comfortable living areas can accommodate a total of eight guests in great comfort.

The house consists in essence of three separate pavilions. The main entrance – accessed from the large parking area at the upper end of the grounds, and then down a tiled staircase bordered by beautiful flowering plants – is via the upper storey of the central pavilion. This part of the villa contains both the well-equipped kitchen and a formal dining area for up to eight people, as well as a convenient powder room. Additionally on this level there is an appealing alfresco dining area under a shady pergola surrounded by mature tropical plants; this is reached via French doors from the main dining room. A gallery in the entrance hall offers an imposing view down to the Great Room, which is accessed by a flight of stairs.

The Great Room itself has a high, vaulted ceiling that gives a very welcome sense of space and light, and is surrounded by large French doors. These open to a semi-circular terrace in natural stone overlooking the attractive pool and sundeck area, and like most other parts of the property also offer superb ocean views. The Great Room has satellite TV with surround sound, a top-quality hi-fi system, plenty of books, and not least a wet bar with its own mini-fridge. It’s also very comfortably furnished, with plenty of inviting sofas and chairs, and as a result makes a pleasant and comfortable area in which to relax with family and friends, especially during the evening.

The three bedrooms are in the remaining two pavilions, one either side of the main pavilion. The spacious, vaulted-ceiling master bedroom is in the west pavilion. From this bedroom French doors open to a delightfully private terrace, bordered by vibrant purple bougainvillea. This area has both comfortable seating and a hammock. From here you’ll enjoy wonderful views of the island’s characteristic lush, green hills, and once again the ever-present ocean. There’s a convenient desk, too, for those who might need to catch up on some personal correspondence during their vacation. The en suite bathroom has a walk-in shower finished in a combination of tiles and natural stone, and also a walk-in closet and dressing area.

The third pavilion, east of the central building, houses two further guest bedrooms – the Blue Suite and the Green Suite – each with its own en suite bathroom facilities. The Blue Suite has a king-sized bed, but this can be converted to a twin-bed configuration if required. The Green Suite has a queen-sized bed. Both of these rooms have an additional single day bed in an adjoining alcove to accommodate two additional guests, although it should be noted that both of these are quite small, and as a result are really suitable only for children. But this arrangement is obviously ideal for those with smaller children who might want to be near their parents. Each of these two guest suites has its own private entrance and bathroom, with double vanity basins and a generous walk-in tiled shower, as well as walk-in closets and dressing areas. Both suites have French doors opening to a shared natural-stone terrace with tables and chairs. Indeed, the entire villa is both spacious enough and inherently so well designed to enable all guests to enjoy a high degree of privacy if required.

Outside, the villa benefits from mature, lovingly maintained and as a result very attractive gardens, with shady palms and mango trees, and a profusion of flowering tropical plants. On either side of the main pavilion a curved exterior staircase (one from the main entrance, and one from the outdoor dining area) leads down to the combined pool and sundeck area. The large, kidney-shaped private pool overlooking Brewer’s Bay is surrounded by a spacious deck with a shady gazebo to the side, and there are plenty of sun loungers for those who just want to sit and soak up the sunshine. The pool can be heated if required, although an additional charge will be made for this. Below the pool area is an area of well-kept green lawn planted with banana, mango and breadfruit trees, together with some very impressive palms and other tropical flora.
