An Ode to the Off-Season in the BVI – A Love Story

September 10th, 2025

Every love story has its own rhythm.
Mine just happens to be set to the gentle slap of Caribbean waves, the rustle of palm leaves in a September breeze, and the blissful absence of… crowds.

I’m currently in week three of six in the British Virgin Islands, and let me tell you — I fall in love with the off-season all over again, every single year. August through early to mid-October is my happy place.

Now, let’s be honest: Yes, quite a few of our famous beach bars are on their annual siesta. Soggy Dollar Bar? Napping. Saba Rock? Napping. Cooper Island Beach Club? Definitely napping. But here’s the thing… the islands themselves never sleep.

The Hidden Gems Still Shining

  • CocoMaya is still here for you on weekends — and they’ve even had live music, because sunsets taste better with a soundtrack.

  • Spend the day at Scrub Island or Anegada Beach Club, both open and ready to spoil you.

  • Villas Virgin Gorda has a perfect villa lined up and ready to welcome you.
  • Seek out local food spots you might normally overlook. You just might find your new favorite conch fritters.

Play Island-Style

Hike Gorda Peak for views that remind you why you booked this trip in the first place.
Snorkel with sea turtles and around the boulders in Spring Bay.
Read that book you’ve been “meaning to get to” for three years.
Start writing your novel (even if it’s just one chapter).
Kayak or Paddleboard Adventure: Glide through calm waters and pretend you’re in a nature documentary.
Sunset Chasing: Pick a new spot every evening and toast to the magic hour.
Or pick up a new hobby — who says you can’t learn watercolor painting with a Painkiller in hand?

Why I Love It More This Time of Year

The pace slows to a gentle hum, like the islands themselves are taking a deep breath. Locals have more time to chat, share stories, and point you toward their favorite hidden spots. The beaches feel like they’re yours alone — no jockeying for the best patch of sand, no background chatter, just the rhythm of the waves and the rustle of palm fronds. Even the sea seems calmer, clearer, more inviting. There’s an intimacy with the BVI in the off-season that you just can’t capture in the busy months — it’s like meeting an old friend without the crowd, where the real personality shines through and the magic feels entirely yours.

One Serious Note: Travel Insurance

Hurricane season is real. I wouldn’t dream of booking this trip without travel insurance — and neither should you. Luckily, we offer plans from all the top names in the business (Allianz, RoamRight, Travel Guard), so you can relax knowing you’re covered if Mother Nature decides to be dramatic.
